Seaberry (Hippophae rhamnoides)
Seaberry or Sea Buckthorn is a medium to large shrub that can be very multifunctional. It produces highly nutritious edible fruit, it fixes nitrogen and can be a very effective security or wildlife hedge due to its thorny nature. The small edible berries are citrusy in flavor and packed with nutrition boasting loads of vitamins and fatty acids. The fruit is often used for juices and sauces, but can also be made into preserves and eaten fresh. Seaberry prefers well draining soil, but we are growing it successfully in heavy clay planted on mounds to aid in drainage. In good conditions seaberry is a medium/fast grower. Full sun is required for healthy plants and good fruit production. Seaberry is dioecious meaning male and female flowers are produced on separate plants. Both a male and a female plant are required for fruit production. One male plant can pollinate six to eight females. Seaberry is wind pollinated. Very hardy down to zone 3. We offer unsexed, bare root seedlings at least 16” tall. We recommend planting several to increase the odds of having both male and female plants.
