Pear (Pyrus communis)

Like so many fruits, a perfectly ripe pear harvested from your own tree is an experience you simply cannot get from a grocery store pear. It’s a fruit worth having for fresh eating alone, but pears can also be canned, pressed and turned into sauce among many other uses. Pears are more tolerant of heavy clay soils than apples, but will still benefit from being planted in a site with fertile, well drained soil. We are still working on expanding our offering of pears and do not yet have much selection. More to come in future seasons!

Hudar

A self fertile pear that originated on a farm in Upstate NY and is well suited for this area. It is an early ripening pear (mid August in zone 6) and is extremely hardy. St. Lawrence Nursery (where I originally sourced our Hudar tree from) claims it is hardy to -50. I certainly cannot verify that level of hardiness, but it has had absolutely no trouble in our location and we experience very strong, cold winter winds. Grafted onto OHxF87, which dwarfs to about 70% of standard. At least 20” tall. Hardy to zone 4 at least.
