Paw Paw Stratified Seed
Paw Paw Stratified Seed
Paw Paw Stratified Seed (Asimina triloba)
Sold in packs of 20 seeds in moist media. Our seed is currently in storage and will ship in late March/early April when fully stratified.
Our paw paw seeds were collected locally from cultivar parents (believed to be Shenandoah and Susquehanna, but the tags have been lost). The fruit of the parent trees is sweet and banana like in flavor. We enjoy it baked into paw paw bread, which is similar to banana bread and very delicious. Grow these seeds for fruit or as a hardy rootstock for grafting known varieties to.
Paw paws are slow to germinate (for us they pop above the soil sometime around the end of June). They are also slow growers so expect to keep them in a nursery context for at least two seasons before moving to their permanent location. Young paw paws benefit greatly from partial shade in their first few years.
Paw paws are native trees that naturally grow in the understory in moist, fertile and well drained soil. Permanent planting sites should be well drained and protected from strong winds as paw paws are particularly susceptible to wind damage. Mature trees can certainly tolerate shade, but will crop much more heavily in full sun. Hardy to zone 5.
