Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis)
Hackberry is a large, tough and versatile tree. They are medium to fast growers and reach heights of 40-60’. Hackberry has tremendous wildlife value for insects, birds and mammals and can grow in just about any soil. The small berries are edible for humans, but should be thought of as a nut or a seed more so than a berry. The hard seeds are covered by a thin, papery flesh the flavor of which reminds me of dates. The seed itself contains protein, fats, carbohydrates and can be made into a fine nut milk. I have read that the seed shells are rich in calcium and can be used as a feed supplement for chickens to aid in egg shell strength. These trees are really useful plants. Hackberries are self fertile. We offer bare root seedlings approximately 16" tall. Hardy to zone 4.
