English Walnut Seedlings (Juglans regia)
English walnut is the walnut most of us are familiar with eating. It produces large, easy to crack nuts that have a tasty kernel inside. Unlike black walnut, the nuts often fall cleanly out of the husk when ripe, which makes processing much easier. Also unlike black walnut, english walnut seems to produce less juglone which makes it more compatible with gardens and landscaping that may contain juglone sensitive plants. The nuts have a variety of culinary uses and are excellent in baked goods, on salads, candied or simply raw as healthy snacks. The immature nuts can also be made into walnut liqueur called nocino. Besides the edible nuts, the wood of english walnut has value for woodworkers and is a beautiful light brown color.
English walnuts are medium sized trees. They have a moderate growth rate and reach heights of 40-60 feet tall and tend to be fairly round in form. They are beautiful shade trees that need full sun and fertile, well drained soil. They will not do well in wet locations or in partial shade. Like other walnuts, english walnut is partially self fertile, but will produce the most nuts when planted near (within 100 feet or so) of another walnut. Our nursery offers bare root seedlings that are 10-13" tall and grown from local parent trees that are proven to be productive and hardy to zone 5/6.
