Butternut, also known as the white walnut, is prized for its rich, tasty nut meat. Pure butternuts are susceptible to butternut canker, which has greatly reduced the native, wild population. Butternuts hybridize with Japanese walnuts very easily and produce trees that often look and function very similarly to pure butternuts, but with resistance to the canker. They are beautiful spreading trees. They prefer deep fertile soil, but can be grown in drier and rockier conditions as well.  They are shade intolerant. Hardy down to zone 4.
