Black Currant Seedlings (Ribes nigrum)

Black currant is a vigorous berry shrub that has a fast growth rate and quickly reaches heights of 5 feet or so. The dark berries, which grow on canes much like raspberries, have many health benefits as they are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C. They have a strong earthy flavor and are typically best when cooked into syrups or jams. Black currant does best in rich, well drained soil, but can tolerate other soil types to a degree. While full sun will yield the best crop it will tolerate partial shade very well. Currants are an excellent understory planting in food forests or shady parts of the garden. Hardy to zone 3. Black currants can serve as an alternate host for white pine blister rust and is restricted in some states, this is something to be aware of if you have populations of white pine in your area.
