It is accustomed to growing directly in sand dunes along the east coast and can tolerate very harsh, dry conditions. While it naturally grows in sandy soils, it is a very tough and adaptable plant and can tolerate heavier clay soils so long as they are able to drain. We have several plantings on mounds in our very heavy clay and they are wonderfully! The beach plum’s ability to tolerate salt makes it a great choice for roadside plantings, where the soil is often exposed, dry and salty. Seedlings show a great deal of variety in fruit size, color and taste, but the fruit is often very tasty and is excellent for jams, jellies and preserves. It is also a wonderful wildlife plant offering pollinator support via abundant white blossoms in the spring, a late summer food source and winter cover for small birds and mammals. Beach plums require a pollination partner so plant at least two. We offer bare root seedlings at least 12\" tall. Generally very cold hardy and long lived. Like most trees, apples prefer well drained, fertile soil but can tolerate other soils, depending on what rootstock is used. All our apples are grafted onto M111, which is an excellent all purpose, semi standard rootstock that tolerates a wide range of soils. You can expect trees grafted on M111 to grow to 15-25’ tall if left unpruned, but a smaller size can be achieved through pruning. Below is a brief description of the cultivars we have available this fall. Very disease resistant and vigorous grower. Of all the apples we are growing, Liberty has been the most successful so far. It grows fast and strong and has had no issues to speak of. The red and yellow\/green fruit is a true multiuse apple excelling as a fresh eating, cooking and cider apple. Ripens mid season. Pollination group B. Hardy to zone 4. Grocery store peaches simply can’t hold a candle to a peach picked from your own tree. Do yourself a favor and get some trees started on our own land. Peaches are self fertile and can be heavy bearers. Annual pruning is needed to create a healthy structure and to promote fruit production. Peach leaf curl is a problem in many areas, but we have had success managing PLC using a safe, homemade spray. See our FAQ page for a link to the recipe. Our trees this year and quite large (5-6’ tall) and will be kept that way for local pickups, but will be pruned to accommodate shipping. This won’t negatively affect your tree as they should be pruned at planting anyway to establish a healthy structure. Pears are more tolerant of heavy clay soils than apples, but will still benefit from being planted in a site with fertile, well drained soil. We are still working on expanding our offering of pears and do not yet have much selection. I certainly cannot verify that level of hardiness, but it has had absolutely no trouble in our location and we experience very strong, cold winter winds.
